They Came upon a Midnight Clear

"What?"

"Yeah, bone dust. We confirmed it ten minutes ago. We thought that it was talcum powder or powdered sugar at first. It was all over the living-room around the presents and there is something else," the CSI lowered his voice. "We found footprints in the bone dust. Small ones."

"How small?"

"Small enough to make his story believable. He probably took one of the kid's action figures and made them."

Stanley nodded and went back over to Charlie and Daniel. Gary went back to dusting for prints on the dining room table.

"Daniel Do you see anything out of place?"

"No. Everything looks about the same as it did when I ran to the neighbors."

"Are you sure?"

Daniel looked around the living room. His eyes grew large.

"We didn't have that many presents," he said, pointing to the Christmas tree and the pile of presents under it.

"Gary!" Stanley said. "C'mere a minute."

The CSI ambled over.

"We need to open the presents."

Gary looked at Daniel.

"Are we gonna need the bomb squad?" Gary asked Stanley.

"I don't think so."

The CSI walked over to the ten or so presents and lifted them one by one with gloved hands and set them on the dining room table so that Daniel and the detectives could watch him open them.

"Which ones aren't yours?" Stanley said.

"The ones that are wrapped in that blue paper."

There were three presents wrapped in a luminescent blue paper. One was larger than the other two.

"I guess just the three blue ones Gary," Stan said.

Gary nodded and started slicing the thin paper with a thin Exacto knife. Beneath the wrapping were three plain white boxes. Gary took the lid off the biggest one and peered inside.

"Oh my God." He said very softly. "What the fuck."

He reached in and lifted out a white carrousel. It looked as if it had been carved from ivory and then dipped in blood. The carving was extremely detailed and even spun when Gary touched it. There were twelve animals around the thing. They were evil parodies of horses, many of them had demonic looking wings or two heads. They looked as though they were screaming in pain, impaled by the poles which ran through their grotesque bodies. The blood slithered into the carved lines, making them look even more repulsive.

"Now we know where all of that bone dust came from," Gary said.

The CSI carefully opened the other two boxes. There was a bloody bone dollhouse that looked haunted, with shingles hanging askew and a slanted misshapen porch. There were people carved into some of the windows. They looked as if their throats had been slashed, one of them had no head at all.
