They Came upon a Midnight Clear

He pulled up his pants and showed Stanley the small bite marks on the back of his leg, then bent over and pulled his shirt up to reveal several scratches there too.

"I fell into the kitchen on the linoleum floor and my glasses went flying. I can't see shit without them. I could feel the little bastards crawling all over me and what felt like bee stings all over as they bit me and stabbed me with their swords and spears. Then I guess I blacked out.

"The next thing that I knew I was tied to a dining room chair with lamp cords and I could hear my wife and my children crying and I couldn't get to th.. them." Daniel started sobbing uncontrollably.

Stanley looked at the man and felt pity for him. Not because he believed him, but because he seemed genuinely sorry for what he had done.

"We need to know where the bodies are Daniel."

"I don't know where they are." Daniel said between sobs. "After awhile they were quiet and all I heard were the sucking sounds. Oh god…I heard them….eating…Ah shit!"

Stanley let the man cry. When he was finished, he asked him again.

"I don't know. I don't know. I told you damnit. I don't know! They finished with them and came for me. I don't know why, but they untied me. I fought them as best as I could, but there were too many of them. I ran. I deserted my wife and my kids and ran to the neighbors and called 911. I never went back..I…left..them there."

"Alright, alright. Calm down. Do you think that if we go back to your house that you'd be able to tell me more about what happened?"

"M..Maybe." Daniel looked as if he had some hope left. Not that they were still alive, but that he'd be able to go back to his home, the place where he had been happy up until last night and that maybe he'd be able to convince Stanley that his story was true.

Stanley opened the door and called out for Charlie.

Cooper poked his head inside.

"Want to take a ride?" Stanley asked.

Charlie shrugged. "Sure. I got nothing better to do."

They went out into the wind and now rapidly falling snow with Daniel handcuffed between them.

"Colder than a witch's tit out here," Charlie said.

"We can take my car. The heater works fast," Stanley said.

They drove across the partially plowed streets with the heater blasting warm air. After fifteen minutes of slipping and sliding, they arrived in front of Daniel's home. The sun was just starting to rise, casting an eerie glow over the yard. The CSI's were still there and they would be for the next few hours. There would be plenty of grumbling inside and Daniel was probably the last person that they wanted to see.

The two detectives collected Daniel out of the back seat. He had been silent the whole way there and he said nothing as they led him up the sidewalk to his front door.

The head CSI, Gary Simpson met them out the door. He took Stanley aside out of hearing range.

"Has he told you where the bodies are yet?"

"You mean you still haven't found them?"

The CSI shook his head. There is a lot of blood gallons of it, but no bodies. The largest piece that we found was someone's lip. We also found something really strange, bone dust."
