Reunion
By: L.M. Mercer

Having decided to do some finger painting, Eliza moved to one of the tables, one covered with a thick layer of blood and reached for a chair to pull it out. Grabbing the chair with her left hand, she was about to tug on it when she saw her wrist out the corner of her eye.

Shocked and confused she let go of the chair and focused on her left arm. There starting halfway between her elbow and wrist and continuing downward, terminating in the middle of her palm was a jagged, gaping cut. All plans of finger painting forgotten, Eliza began poking the wound edges, widening it and causing a slow trickle of blood to flow down her arm and drip onto the table top, forming circles in the other layer when it landed. She watched the interesting patterns as they appeared for a while, trying to predict where each drop would hit.

Suddenly, in the span of a second, a body flickered into and out of the space between her arm and the table. Startled, Eliza moved away and watched, riveted, as over the next minute the body flickered in and out of sight, like a television being turned on and off. Each time the body became more and more substantial and less transparent. Finally the body remained, sprawled over the table, in a peaceful repose of sleep, and Eliza could tell it belonged to one of the women who had attended the reunion and that she was covered in blood. Inching closer, Eliza laid her hand on the woman’s shoulder and gave her a gentle shake, “Hello?” she asked. “You okay?”

The other woman slowly lifted her head as she awoke. Looking around carefully, she got up and hurriedly limped to the other side of the table, screaming, “Oh my God, it’s you!” as she went.

Puzzled by the woman’s actions, Eliza followed her around the table. Glancing at her name tag, Eliza asked, “Whoa, hey, JoBeth, what’s wrong?”

“Stay away! Keep away from me!” JoBeth screamed, cautiously backing away from Eliza.

“But, I only want to help you,” Eliza said, while she tried inching closer again.

Swinging her arms wildly, JoBeth shouted, “Help me! you want to help me?” Seeing Eliza’s confusion on her face JoBeth explained. “You locked us in this room so no one could escape, then you caused all of this bloodshed with a single knife, slicing and slashing your way across the room, before turning the blade upon yourself and hacking a path down your arm.”

Shocked and disbelieving, Eliza backed away, shaking her head and chanting, “No, no, no…”
