Review of Movie Reviews of Obsession & Hokum

I'm back! Miss me? Muhahahahahaha!
So, I watched a crap movie, and I watched a good movie. No they aren't the same movie. The first movie I watched was the latest viral sensation Obsession. Here is the IMDB write up.

Obsession
After breaking the mysterious "One Wish Willow" to win his crush's heart, a hopeless romantic finds himself getting exactly what he asked for but soon discovers that some desires come at a dark, sinister price.
Sounds like a normal scary movie, right? Sure. The scary part being the watching part. I was not amused. I will give Kudo's to the actress who played Nikki, having to be that crazy and bounce between two separate personalities was pretty good, but not good enough to hold me. I was bored silly. It dragged, it didn't make much sense, the instant reaction was too far-fetched to make it believable which pulled me out of the fantasy of the movie. The occult shop was so over the top. I've been in many, I know people who own them, the production staff didn't do their research. I know movies are fiction, but I want a movie to pull me in, to hold me captive for the hour and a half that it is playing. Then release me back into the world. This couldn't hold me for more than 45 minutes. I had to tap out. I found myself scrolling my phone, playing a few games, chatting, and not watching what was happening on the screen. It did however help me make a decision. Over the past few years, there have been a few that I have tapped out on, but usually I will see a movie to the bitter end. I've made the decision now that if I am not enjoying it, if I am distracted and doing other things, I'm not going to waste my time and pretend to watch something I am not interested in.
So, I moved on to my next movie.
Hokum posterHokum.
A horror writer visits an Irish inn to scatter his parents' ashes; unaware the property is said to be haunted by a witch.
Love me a good location film, especially if it is in Ireland or Scotland. Although this could have been filmed anywhere with a large castle like inn. I chose to believe it was in Ireland. Being a writer myself, the storyline caught my attention.
It delivers the scares and the creeps right from the word go. It held me hostage until the bitter end and then I was left reeling. Hot damn it was a good movie! The acting was spot on, the effects, while not overstated, nor easily identified as CGI, were amazing. They were good old-fashioned make-up and lighting. It took me for a wild ride and just when you think it's over, it drops you off another cliff and sends you spiraling downwards again. It was amazing. Although it did leave some questions unanswered regarding the owner of the Inn. But over-all Ohm Bauman, who is the main character, is one that you desperately want to dislike, but end up feeling for him. Especially the scene with his mother. The story behind that, is heartbreaking, but you have to watch the movie to find that out.
I have to say, this takes me back to the days of a good old folklore ghost story. It has all the elements one would want and doesn't rely on jump scares to get the hearts of the audience racing. The cinematic approach with the dark lighting and the dark background and the scenery, all aid in bringing that claustrophobic, foreboding feeling across very well. The snark of Ohm and his driving desire to alienate and push away anyone who dares to give him a kind word or show interest makes him unlikeable at the beginning but explains so much when you get to the end. My heart broke for him.
If you want a good, scary Halloween type movie, this fits that bill.
I would recommend you watch this movie, but honestly, I don't really care if you do. I watched it. That is why you are reading this column. For my opinion. I gave it.
Obsession, sucked.
Hokum didn't.
You choose.
Until next month
