BURBANK, CALIFORNIA, May 6, 2024 —
What was once whispered as "unheard of" in the indie comic scene has now become reality. On Free Comic Book Day, Saturday, May 4, 2024, Dark Myth Comics made history with the release of American Smash #½: To Die For, a bold and hilarious entry into their growing superhero satire universe. Even more impressive, the company self-distributed the comic completely free to all fifty U.S. states and Ontario, Canada, a feat few independent publishers have ever dared to attempt.
Originally printed for Free Comic Book Day, this outrageous fast-food-fueled one-shot is packed with grotesque humor, pop culture chaos, and biting satire. American Smash #½ introduces readers to a world where superhero antics collide with twisted consumer culture.
In the comic, Jay Hero and his no-nonsense partner Sidekick face their greasiest challenge yet when McArnold's new menu item, the "Grimm-Ass Shake," begins turning customers into grotesque purple corpses. Murderous mascots, corporate conspiracies, and gut-busting action await in this gloriously warped adventure.
The story was co-created and written by David K. Montoya and Alan Russo, with Idris Yusuf on pencils, G.D. Patrick on inks, Godstime Ismail handling colors, and Jorge Medina providing the lettering.
A Statement from David K. Montoya
Chief Executive Officer and Publisher of The JayZoMon Dark Myth Company, LLC
Parent Company of Dark Myth Comics
"When we first talked about getting a comic book into every U.S. state and parts of Canada on Free Comic Book Day, people told us it couldn't be done. That it was too ambitious. But that is exactly why we did it. We wanted to prove that indie publishers don't have to think small. We can make big moves and bold statements. American Smash #½ is more than just a free comic. It is a symbol of what independent creativity and tenacity can achieve. And we are just getting started."
