Mr. Woods began writing rather late in life, but was always fascinated by the 'Cliffhanger Serials' that used to be shown before the main feature at movie theaters in the '30s and '40s. In these 'shorts', the hero was frequently left hanging off the edge of a cliff (hence, the name) at the end of a serial chapter, or there would perhaps be a fair maiden tied to (among other things) a railroad track with death, in the form of a steaming locomotive barreling down upon her.
