Phone Call
By: Peggy Gerber

If I could just un-answer that phone,
my heart would not be shattered into a million pieces,
and I would still be under the blissful illusion
that life makes a modicum of sense and my
loved ones are healthy and safe.
If I could just un-answer that phone,
my friend would still be alive,
and I wouldn't have to think about
his family wandering around in a fog
wondering how they will live without him.
If I could just un-answer that phone,
I wouldn't have to ponder the fragility of life,
or why bad things happen to good people,
and the world would not be spinning off its axis,
and my hands would not be shaking,
and my tears would not be spilling,
and I would not have to plan for a funeral.
If I could just un-answer that phone.
