Review of Wreckfest for the Xbox One
By: Jeff R. Young

I know I've said it before but racing simulation games have never been my cup of tea. I admit I have found a few I enjoy, but even then, it took a few days of playing before I started to find interest in them. But as a gamer, I found that sometimes I have to step out of the realm of my comfort zone and test out games that I usually wouldn't bat an eyelash at. So, when I started to surf the game world for a title, I might find interesting, I came across Wreckfest, which grabbed my attention instantly.

Here was a game designed to not just race cars but also to destroy your opponents in the process. I was always a fan of watching demolition derbies as a kid and loved the chaos and destruction the events offered. So, here I found a game that let me be in the middle of all that chaos, without the dangers of hurting myself or having to constantly buy new cars to destroy.

The game offers several different play styles, from full-on demo derbies to banger races and other unique scenarios. And when I say unique, I mean it in every sense of the word. Some of the scenarios are unrealistic and could never happen in real life, like having a full-on demo derby using riding lawn mowers or massive farming equipment. But fantasy or not, there is always entertainment in wanton destruction and mayhem.

Like many other racing games, there is an extensive list of vehicles to buy or unlock. Each one upgradable to make it stronger or faster and help in how it handles the tracks. You can even decorate the cars with silly add ons to make your vehicle stand out. I personally like putting the rubber ducky on the hood.

There are several modes of gameplay to keep things interesting. There is the career mode, multiplayer mode, and you can even design custom events. The career mode offers different types of races and events that sometimes help unlock various cars, some of which are so off the wall they deserve an award. My favorite, of course, is the outhouse on wheels!

No matter what mode you play in, one aspect that rules the game is the physics engine. It is admittedly comical when you crash into something and do a complete flip, then keep driving. However, the game does keep track of how much damage was done to each part of your car. Too much damage to one place may cause your breaks to fail or you're steering to die, and of course, if you sustain too much damage, your car gets wrecked out. But of course, the same works in reverse, do enough damage to your opponent, and they're down for the count.

I think most will find this title to be simple yet fun. There really is no depth or story behind it, but it does offer a chance to take out the day's frustrations by smashing and destroying your opponents, whether through multiplayer or virtual. I find it a healthy kind of therapy in which to release my inner road rage.

Although Wreckfest was never a ground-breaking hit in the gaming world, it can still be found on Xbox 1, the PS4, and PC, with several seasonal DLC's to go along with it. All in all, I rate Wreckfest at three stars because I can't deny that having the ability, and often the goal, of smashing and destroying things brings me joy in some twisted way. So, if you are the type of player who likes to race and crash simultaneously, I challenge you to give it a try.

Happy gaming!
