PIONEERS ON ZEXTL 7
By: John Grey

We're far from earth,
a brand new wonder
but the same old complaints.

The soil is rich,
the allotments generous,
but many of us want more.

Pioneers on an outworld,
the air is breathable
but a little thin for some tastes.

And yes, the days are longer
than we're used to,
hence the grumbles of messed-up sleep.

We're different colors, different races,
and that's too much
for the bigots among us,

Some adapt,
some whine like hurricane warnings,
a few take it out on their families.

It's too hot, too cold.
Work's too hard, too soft.
Life's too unstructured, too regimented.

Folks came here to start afresh,
but they brought along
all that they left behind.

New planets exist
for this troubling truism…
Earthlings are Earth wherever they go.
