DeSoto Caverns
By: John W. Flukinger

A Conquistador,
According to its legends,
Named DeSoto came.

Breathe in the moist air,
Touch a stalagmite long dead,
Squeeze through narrow rocks

Deep, dark and twisted.
Cramped corridors to high cliffs,
Come, enjoy your stay.

Water drips on heads,
Some stalagmites shattered from
Civil War soldiers.

Here, a moonshine pit,
From the prohibition era,
People drank, and fought.

Where is this Cavern?
At Childersburg, my good friend,
Alabama State.

Learn of Indians,
Who once buried their dead here.
Go, go and visit.
