For What Is Yours
By: Steven Bruce

I'd forgotten about the small
spider beside the fridge.
I'd planned to scoop it up, in my hands,
and drop it into the garden.
But when I checked, I noticed
a larger spider facetoface
with the small one.
Curiosity defeated me.
I left them alone for a few days,
to see what'd happen.
When I returned,
a web had appeared.
The larger spider
was gone, and poised
in the web
was the little guy.
He'd claimed his ground,
beaten the odds,
how could I
throw him out
into the cold
after that?
