She read the note which was written gracefully on the back, before turning the photo over. 'Steven. Maybe this will help bring you home!' Slowly, Elizabeth turned the small picture over, while keeping her eyes tightly closed.
After a few moments and several deep breaths, she opened her eyes and was face to face with the image of a happy, smiling family. Steven was in a handsome blue suit, white shirt and black tie. His hair was in an out of style pompadour with a single, jet black curl falling onto his forehead. Sitting to his right was a lovely, fair skinned, green eyed, red haired beauty, wearing a baby blue sun dress with a wide, eyelet lace collar. On the woman's left ring finger was a glittering diamond ring and gold wedding band.
Sitting on their laps, they held what must have been a set of year old twins, in matching sailor outfits. The girl, who sat on Steven's knee, wore a pristine, snow white dress with pink accents. On the top of the girl's strawberry-blonde, shoulder length curls sat a small sailor's cap, with a large pink bow. The little boy, who was half off his mother's lap, was in a stork white shorts suit, with blue trim. Sitting off center atop the boy's ruby-red curls, was his slightly crumpled sailors cap.
Elizabeth sat there, staring blankly at the photograph until the doorbell rang, nearly two hours later. Pulled back to reality with a jolt, she shook the cobwebs from her head as she walked to the door.
"Who is it?" Elizabeth asked, cautiously, her voice hoarse with spent tears.
"Me, Steven," came the reply.
She slowly unlocked and then pulled opened the door, trying to figure out how to broach the subject of his secret family with him, but when she saw him standing there, so smug and yet looking so damnably handsome, Elizabeth blurted out, "Is there anything you want to tell me?"
"No, not that I can think of. Why?" Steven replied, as he leaned forward and tried to kiss her. When she pulled away from him, he asked, "What's wrong? Did I do something?"
"Did you do something?" she nearly shouted. "Maybe you should tell me who Annabelle, Johnny and Samantha are! Were you even going to tell me about your 'wife' and children?" Elizabeth demanded.
Seeming to deflate before her eyes, Steven said quietly, "Oh. So, you know about them? Well, believe it or not, that's the reason I came by tonight. I wanted to tell you that as much as I love you, I do have a family in Beaver Hollow and I have to return to them."
Elizabeth didn't believe what he said about how he felt about her--not for one minute. She had loved this man with all her heart, but now wanted nothing more than to have him out of her life. "Fine. Then go. I wish you all the best, really I do," she lied, and choking back tears, moved away from him.
