Scream of the Butterfly
Part 2

Kevin waited for his laptop to boot and looked around the large office. Paige had two desks, one apparently for design and the other for more ordinary office duties like e-mail, correspondence and general computer applications. The design desk sat in a corner to the left of the doorway and faced it, providing a narrow aisle of about four feet for Paige to slide a tall rolling stool around while she looked over, corrected and generally edited plans and specifications for nearly completed projects. He nodded to himself; he’d suggested strongly that they move the design desk from against the wall itself to it’s present position, reversing the orientation on the theory that it would be better for Paige to be able to see the hallway, particularly at later hours since Dawson’s people worked odd shifts. He would have been glad to claim the idea but it had actually been Pam who’d pointed it out. It allowed him to attach a few discrete monitors of both an electronic and magical nature in the clutter of books, pencils and templates that graced the left half of the desk edge.

Pam finished unpacking some of her own electronics and left the office to check on a pinhole camera she’d placed at the end of the hall, along with a directional microphone. After a moment, Kevin heard a rather loud curse from her and she returned in a moment, expression neutral but eyes hard and dangerous. She held up what was left of both the camera and the mike. “Fried. I’m not sure how but they destroyed about two thousand bucks worth of electronics.”

Kevin sat down at his keyboard, typed a few words and then looked up. “What about the passive gear?”

“Haven’t checked yet. I was hoping this stuff might have recorded something before getting zapped. Does it look like there was anything backed up? They looked to have pulled the memory.”

Kevin typed a couple of letters and then clicked a few times with the mouse. After a moment he looked up, his expression slightly pleased. “Well, there’s something there. About three hundred meg of video, it looks like. Glad I followed your advice.”
