Foresight
By: David K. Montoya
Detective Stax dropped the blood-stained chain saw to the floor. He
could not begin to fathom the number of innocent lives that had been
taken by the killer who had used this common yard tool (hence the name
given to the murderer, the Yard Tool Killer).
A patrol cop had followed the suspected killer to this location, an
abandoned saw mill. The murder weapon had been found, but where the
killer was remained the big question. Detective Stax was the first to
respond to the officer's call for back up. Even though he was officially
off duty, he was the closest officer to the scene and Stax had pulled up
in time to see the possible murder suspect run inside the mill. The
detective took up the chase by foot, but the killer was too elusive for
Stax and seemingly disappeared into the cavernous darkness of the huge
building. As he continued the search, Stax stumbled across the bloody
chain saw, partially hidden in the rear of the mill. Soon after that
discovery, the rest of the department had joined the hunt for the Yard
Tool Killer.

"How the hell did that butcher get away?" Chief Morley demanded in his
usual, no-nonsense manner.
"He was too quick for me, Chief," Stax explained. "It didn't matter how
fast I ran, that guy left me in the dust."
Morley grumbled a few choice words under his breath as he knelt down to
examine the weapon. "Hmmm...Craftsman. A good brand. You know it comes
with a lifetime guarantee," the chief stated as he stood up and dusted
the dirt from his pant legs. Turning back to the detective, he said,
"Funny how an average Joe could outrun a former track and field star, eh,
Matt?"
"Look, Chief," Stax shot back, becoming irritated with Morley's attitude. "The guy must know his way around this old mill--every nook and cranny.
He just disappeared, like a damned ghost. Maybe he's actually smarter
than we gave him credit for."
