The third month of the year is sacred to Mars, the god of war. Mars
usually traveled with his two sons, Deimos and Phobos, and still does to
this day, as they are the names of the two moons which circle mars.
March 1st is the birthday of Mars, was the Roman New Year's Day, and also
heralded the beginning of spring.
March 15th is called 'The Ides of March.' This date is famous for being
the day on which Julius Caesar was assassinated in 44 B.C.E. It is also
the holy day of Rhea, Greek goddess of the earth, mother of Zeus and an
aspect of the Great Mother. Howard Phillips Lovecraft died on March
15th, 1937.
The Vernal Equinox falls on March 20th, when the day and night are of
equal length. For the next few months, each day will last a little
longer and spring--life reborn-- will be upon the land.
