Mind Meld

Genre: Drabble & Flash

I'd been knocked off my bike and was clinically dead for two minutes. When I was resuscitated, I discovered this ability that completely changed my life. It enabled me to see into the nasty, dirty depths of depravity all around me, and I found that a lot of my neighbours and friends had become alien to me. By that I mean actual, malevolent, evil, time-travelling, slimy black blobs. Not everybody, but enough that I wanted to run.

I realised it was unlikely anyone would believe me; I needed evidence, which took time. I'd always thought my secret was safe, until tonight. As I stood at the bar, a hand touched mine. I turned to find, smiling, but with total terror in his eyes, my brother Sam.
He handed me a note that read, "Don't react, stay calm, or we're both dead. Get to the car; we have to leave now."
He then said, "Hi Sis, Mom says supper's almost ready, but she needs us to pick up some fresh basil."

We strolled out, then ran. We jumped into the car and smoothly drove away. Dad sat looking straight ahead.
"Please sweetheart, try to look calm until we get out of town."
I nodded, too shaken to do more. Once clear, Dad said,
"You muttered in your sleep, every night, that you heard vile aliens. You became more and more terrified. I began to record you. I gathered as much evidence and as many names as I could. Now it's time to leave town. So far, they're only here, but we have to warn the world to be prepared for war."
