On The Job

A night in unlit hallways,
pitch-black alleys,
grabbing strays,
sucking them dry.

Then back to the house,
do laundry, take shower,
vacuum up the dust
but not too much.

Long daylight sleep
in musty cellar,
then wake-up,
get dressed,
back into being
a demon of the dark.

When I put it this way,
it's just another job.
But a plumber's pipes
don't scream.
A lawyer's clients
aren't prone to swooning.
And a doctor may only ask,
"Does it hurt here?"
He's not obliged to make it so.
