In The End
By: Kathleen Chamberlin

In the End
It is the little things that matter
The unexpected compliment
The random generous offer
The kindness freely offered, no strings attached
The beauty of a sun-streaked sky as the sun sinks below the horizon
The sea of purple heather swaying upon the heath, as far as the eye can see
The shared laughter at an unusual turn of phrase,
The excitement of a grandchild on Christmas morning
The quiet slumber of the dog at my feet
The first shy smile of a love affair about to begin
The vastness of the night sky ablaze with stars
The profusion of spring tulips swaying gently against the breeze
The faded family photographs, lovingly labeled, tucked inside leather albums
A gesture, a smile, a melody, a birthday card lovingly inscribed
Each an unspoken understanding
An offering
Of the simple, little things that make life matter.
