The Merman of Sabang Bay
By: Fhen Em

Once, in the cove of Sabang Bay, there lived a merman named Mack. While other sea creatures raced ships and twirled in whirlpools, Mack spent his days gathering treasures from shipwrecks — porcelain plates, gold cups, silver spoons, statues, metal boxes, and other things the sea had forgotten.

One night a storm rolled in. The sky went dark. Waves grew taller than coconut trees. A sailing ship snapped in half. "Help!" someone cried.

Mack dove. Beneath the roaring water, he saw her: an 18-year-old girl clinging to a splintered piece of wood. She was strong, but the sea was stronger. Her eyes fluttered shut. The waves were too wild for her tired arms. She was slipping under.

Mack grabbed her and kicked toward the surface. He swam. Push, push, push. The waves shoved him back, but he pushed harder. All he wanted was to reach the sand.

When they reached shore, Mack laid the young woman gently on the beach. She coughed, breathed, and opened her eyes for one blink. All she saw was a blur of silver and kind eyes under the moon. Then the next wave pulled Mack back into the sea.

The young woman, named Katherine, woke up in her mother's arms. The fishermen said, "The sea was merciful." But Katherine shook her head. "No. A boy saved me."

From that day on, Katherine returned to the cove every afternoon. She carried shells in her pockets, sketched waves and clouds in her notebook, and wrote her thoughts in the sand. She always sat where the water kissed the shore. "I don't know your name," she whispered to the sea. "But you saved me. I promise I'll find you and say thank you."

Deep below, Mack heard her. He hid behind coral and blushed.

Katherine kept her promise in her own way. She joined the town's coastal clean-ups. She planted mangrove trees along the shore. And she taught the younger kids, "We take care of the ocean, because the ocean takes care of us."

On quiet nights, when the moon was bright, Mack would swim close to shore. He never showed his whole tail. Only a flicker of silver.
