Part Twenty-two
By: Tim Law
When Jack reached the emergency exit, dressed in the stolen firefighter uniform, he found one of the girls still loitering there. The alarm continued to sound, but the girl looked to be in no hurry. Jack could see it was not Lisa. He could also see that his disguise was not going to fool this girl.
"Get outta my way," he growled as he approached.
"You want her… You gotta go through me…" the girl replied.
"As you wish," Jack said with confidence.
The girl looked strong, but Jack knew he was stronger. Placing a hand firmly on the girl's shoulder he made to push her aside so he could step by. In an instant he felt his arm wrenched back behind him as his face met the wall. The firefighter's helmet took the brunt of the damage, but Jack suspected he was going to have a bruised cheek in a minute or two.
"You're gonna regret that," said Jack, his voice level, not revealing a single iota of the anger boiling inside of him.
"I've dealt with bullies like you, and worse," the girl stated, her own voice just as level as Jack's was. "So, when I let you go, keep that in mind, turn around and walk away."
"Fine, whatever…" Jack growled.
"You're not coming through here," the girl said as she slowly released her grip on Jack's arm.
Immediately, Jack threw back his elbow, catching the girl in the stomach. She made a surprised OOF sound as she doubled over and sunk to the passageway floor.
"I should make you pay for slowing me down," Jack stated. "But I have a date with a friend which I seem to be running late for."
Shoving the emergency exit door open, he stepped out onto the street. Looking around there was no sign of Lisa.
Where the hell have you gone?
Cheeking down one end of the alleyway and then the other, there was little evidence amongst the debris from the cyclone to show which way Lisa had gone.
"Stupid bitch," grumbled Jack, considering going back in to 'question' Lisa's friend.
The emergency door was one way though. If he wanted to do that, he would have to go back around to the front of the pub. Jack knew he had wasted enough time. He'd just have to trawl the streets and see if Lisa turned up. Hustling back to where he had parked the car, he disposed of the cracked helmet. He left the rest of the firefighter's uniform on though as he knew it could be a handy look if he was asking questions. The car was still where he had parked it, but when he looked inside Jack could clearly see that his brother was gone.
"Bloody hell…" he cursed.
Philip was loose on the streets of Darwin. Would he find Lisa before Jack did? What would his brother do if he did? Jack considered for a moment leaving the two together and just hopping back into the car, driving away. Philip was family though, and Lisa… Well, her crime of running away when things got tough… That could be forgiven, in time. Jack left the car where it was and headed toward the main drag. All he could do was ask. Jack could be nice when he needed to be. Hell, that was exactly how he got Lisa to love him in the first place. His cheek throbbed, but Jack pushed the anger down, way down deep. Whoever he found first out of Philip and Lisa would probably cop it. For now, that fury served no purpose.
"Hey guys," he asked a pair of volunteers, cleaning up the wreckage. "I'm looking for two people, a man and a woman, reported lost."
"Yeah, we've seen a few people wandering around," said one of the volunteers. "What do they look like."
Jack thought for a moment, trying to remember what Philip was wearing when he got dragged by Jack into the car.
"Yeah, we've seen that guy," the chatty volunteer replied. "He was headed on foot toward High Street."
"And was he following a girl, a bit younger than me?" Jack asked, hopeful.
"Sorry, mate, no girl," said the other volunteer. "Maybe try the servos, everyone is headed that way if they are looking for a ride out of here, a feed, or both."
"Thanks," said Jack. "I'll just do that… Maybe grab a bite to eat myself."
The pair did not respond, getting on with the job of tidying instead. At that, the notion of being ignored, Jack felt his anger grow. This was fuel for the fire, and when that fire was allowed to burn, Jack sensed it was going to be a big one, a bonfire. In silence he left the pair and headed in the direction of where he thought that Philip might be. Two sets of eyes hunting down Lisa were surely going to be better than one. And Philip on leash was a whole lot less trouble than a version of his brother wandering about on his own. Once Philip was found, maybe a bacon and egg roll with a coffee would do them both some good. No point looking for lost and lonely ladies on an empty stomach. With a plan beginning to form, Jack felt a little better. It was only a matter of time before he headed back home. That was a mess of a different nature. Once he had spent all his anger on Lisa and his brother, Jack knew he would need to muster up a whole new batch of fury. A certain Detective Painful deserved what was coming for her. Sonya Fields had been snooping around where her nose did not belong for long enough. There was a lesson she needed to be taught, and Jack was only happy to be her teacher. Hell, if the punishment warranted it, she may need to spend some time with Philip. That would help her case quite a lot. It would be a pity she'd not live long enough to submit the evidence.
