My Superpower
An Autism Awareness Poem
By: Tim Law

I'm different
It's true
So different to you
And maybe
Just maybe
You don't like what I do

Can I count in my head?
Calculating exactly all those numbers you said
Or am I simply too silent instead
Do my noises scare you?
Did I not read that social cue?
Does my behaviour have you and your friends seeing red?

I remember each meeting
New friends that I am greeting
I can recall your birthdate and what you've been eating
Did you meet a Christine with a K
You don't see that everyday
For me each memory is precious as time is so fleeting

My stimming never bothers
My sisters and my brothers
Those that care
The ones who are always there
When life gets too much
They always find for me a way I can share

They are the ones who celebrate
Never do they commiserate
Always on time, never ever late
Reminding me that my differences are my superpower
In any moment, each second and hour
Share my joy and deflate those times when I feel down or irate

So, look beyond your normalcy
Discover and embrace the amazing person that is me
Can you understand? Will you one day see?
I am different, this is true
Oh, so very different to you
But my differences are what make me truly special and free
