"Miserable buggers." Johnny swatted at the droning mosquitoes and gnats swarming him, but they vanished abruptly. The nearby street lights went out, too. Shrugging, he kept walking.
Something brushed his shoulder, although he'd heard no sound. He turned, gasped, and stumbled backward.
A creature the size of a large dog hovered in the air, looking like a cross between a mosquito and a wasp. Shooting forward, it grabbed the man and flew away.
Johnny yelled and flailed around, but couldn't get loose. The creature bit his neck, and he felt his life draining away. Soon his body was a bloodless husk.
