Well-Deserved

By: Gabriella Balcom

I'm grateful for so many things
That I can't believe it or contain
My feelings. My cup runneth over
And it's near impossible to remain
Indifferent. I can't help but smile
As good, happy memories carry me
Away, empowering me mile by mile.
Knowing how very blessed I've been
buoys me, fueling hope and dreams,
Energizing and strengthening me when
Evil attacks me in multitudes and teams,
And trouble or hardship weigh me down.
Taking breath after breath, I keep going,
Dig my heels in, and refuse to frown.
Instead, I focus on simple truths like
How staying the course can truly build
Character and strength. That isn't new
As far as concepts and it's also filled
With needed actions like laboring hard
And not giving up. Many reject it in favor
Of standing for nothing at all and doing
Whatever comes easiest. They don't savor
The warmth that comes with doing good,
Much less care anything about that kind
Of thing, but it means the world to me.
Determination and hope fill my mind
And energy courses through my veins.
Though you can't see them, they're there
And I'm so very blessed beyond measure.
I have my family — my beloved treasure —
And know beyond all doubt that things
Will only get better, so my heart sings.

The End
