Sleepy Hollow

"What in the h…" Ichabod started to say, but was unable to finish that sentence, as he heard a peculiar noise behind him. Frightened as to what it might be, he stood there in silence for a moment. Then, feeling the heat of heavy breathing on his neck, the doctor slowly turned to look over his shoulder.

What he saw was a huge black horse that was snorting hot breath against his neck. But that sight did not bother him nearly as much as what he saw sitting atop the animal; the headless figure, draped in a dark cloak and pulling his sword from a scabbard. In complete terror, Ichabod took off from the grave site running and screaming, while the headless horseman quickly followed.

"Help me," he cried out, weaving between the taller headstones. As he looked back, he was amazed and even more frightened at what he saw. The stallion seemed to plow right through the many grave stones, totally unharmed. Ichabod also noticed an evil red grow that came from where the eyes of the horse should have been.

Just as he turned to see where he was going, he was met head on with the back side of a shovel. When the cold steel met his face, Ichabod fell to the ground. Wiping blood from his eyes, he looked up to see the person holding the spade. It came as no surprise to him that it appeared to be the same person who had been digging the grave. Crane was unable to make out details of the face, due to the now thickened fog that now surrounded everything.

"It’s pointless to try and outrun him," said a familiar voice.

"D-do I know you?" the doctor asked.

"Indeed," he answered, then peered down through the fog to reveal his identity.

"Mister Mayor!" Crane cried, with a break in his voice.

"You know, Ichabod, my boy, if I were you I’d be honored. He hand picked you. Now, I don't expect you to understand, but it's a big honor to be chosen," the mayor said, watching as the horseman and his beast came up to them.

Without hesitation the headless demon dismounted his steed and went straight after Ichabod, who made one last attempt to get away with his life, but was halted by another blow from the back side of the shovel.

In the end, Ichabod let out a blood curdling scream as the headless figure swung up his sword, aiming to make his next kill.

The following morning, everyone met at the town square where an important announcement was to be made. Once everyone was present, the Mayor worked his way to the front of the group and promptly started.

"I have good news for the people of Sleepy Hollow. 'He who has no name' has found a new, perfect match, which will ensure us, his humble servants, yet another decade of peace and well being," said the Mayor. "Now, join with me and give praise to, 'He with no name.'"

With that, everyone turned and they watched the dark figure riding his black stallion slowly through the square. They smiled and waved as he passed by, and the figure smiled back with his new face, a ghastly, pale face, which adorned the head that had once belonged to Ichabod Crane.
