A Very Special Angel
By: Peggy Gerber

As a milestone birthday
ushers in my final chapter,
I dream a magical button,
a mystical portal from
which a very special angel
will appear when the time is right.

An angel to whisk me off
to that other dimension
before the ravages of old age
have consumed me like a
charred piece of toast.

Before my vision has become
as cloudy as an opaque wall,
and my hearing as dull
as a plastic butter knife,
trapping me in a world of
darkness and silence.

Before my skin has withered
like dying leaves
that crunch beneath your feet,
and words have escaped me
so I must cry out for things
I can no longer articulate.

Before my usefulness
as a human being has reached its end,
and I have transformed into a
burden to the people I love most.

At that right time,
I will bravely push the button
with my dignity intact,
and summon that special angel,
to take my hand and escort me
into my next adventure.
