Clytie, Apollo and Daphne
By: Dr. Elizabeth V. Koshy

---------Clytie, Apollo and Daphne
Standing statuesque in his shining chariot of ivory and gold,
Apollo draws sighs and steals hearts across the world.
His winged horses gallop from eastern skies,
Spreading warmth and light, afar and nigh.
Besotted, Clytie, the water nymph
Cannot take her eyes off him!
Drawn like waves to the moon
She spends her days in a swoon
Following her golden haired heavenly idol,
Basking in Apollo's beams, imagined or actual.
Here's unwilling Daphne, who'd Apollo's great love, ignited.
Into a laurel tree did her father transform her, farsighted.
There's Clytie: Apollo changed her into a sunflower
For having informed Peneus, Daphne's father!
Condemned to love fore'er unrequited,
Apollo, ignored; Clytie, slighted.
Distraught Apollo in despair wears
A laurel wreath in his golden hair;
Clytie, mirrors Apollo's shape and color
And follows from morn to eventide her charmer!
