In the Middle of the Night
By: Padmini Krishnan

He rubs his face on a cold wall,
drawing solace from it.
Strange noises erupt
from his 6-year old mouth as
he creates a unique combination
of colors on his canvas,
drawing intricate patterns with ease,
creating a masterpiece each day,
which he neither cares for
nor is aware of.
She listens to her son's loud babbles
from the next room as rage
colors her mind
at the child she got
and the 'normal' one she dreamt of.
Her body shivering with
anger and distaste,
she walks away
whenever he approaches her.
However, in the middle of the night,
in the solitude of a lonely bird's song,
her heart melts
as she wakes up to his soft sobs,
and rushes to cuddle him,
crying with him
as the mother in her reawakens.
