Through Wolf-Like Eyes Pt. 5
By: David K. Montoya

A warm smell of Colitas filled Whick's home. Despite the fact that he was the Captain of the police force, he was his own person. The Captain did what he wanted, loved who he wanted, and was who he wanted to be.

Whick held a lighter beneath the tightly rolled paper, his job was stressful, and that was his escape.

Whick pulled from the roach and handed it off to the younger man who lied next to him. He bellowed out the thick white smoke when his phone began to buzz and bounced around on the end table beside him.

With a groan, Whick snatched up the phone and answered. "This is Whick."

"We need to keep the fact that the city has a serial killer loose away from the media," the voice said in an altered state.

Whick sat up in bed and asked, "Mister Mayor, is that you?"

"I have a re-election in November, Whick," the voice, who was identified as the Mayor, said. "You help me with this, and I will ensure you are in the Chief's seat by March. Isn't that what you want, right?"

"Yes, sir," Whick said cautiously.

"Keep this shit out of the news until I am re-elected for another term, and you will be our next Chief of Police," the Mayor said. "Is that a deal?"

"You have a deal, sir," Whick answered, turning at the young man with a self-serving smile.

"What?" the young man asked.

"Looks like I'm getting a promotion," Whick said, taking the roach back. "I think we need to celebrate."
