The First Time

Katie's stomach churned, vomit shooting up her throat. She threw up repeatedly, dry heaving afterward. She swayed on her feet, and horror forced her to her knees. Chest tight, she couldn't breathe, much less think straight.
Her appetite was nonexistent later. She couldn't even force crackers or toast down.
When she went to bed, sleep eluded her completely. She'd conjured up flames, using them to set a man on fire and burn him alive. His face and screams replayed in her mind again and again.
Even so, Katie knew he'd deserved death and then some. That made all the difference.
