This was the climax of the ceremony. Beneath the reinforced, Plexiglass-domed marquee, friends and family members created a ripple of almost electric excitement. The registrar coughed lightly to regain attentive silence.

Smiling, she said, "Do you, Circe Esquolent, take Patrick as your husband?"

Nodded assent.

"Do you, Patrick Smythe, take Circe as your wife?"

"I do."

"Is there anyone who can raise a valid objection? No? Good." Turning back to the happy couple, she said: "I see you have gone for implants rather than rings. Therefore, Patrick, you may now squorgle the bride, as I pronounce you man and Martian."
