The Trevails of a Man of Science
By: John Grey

The hair was hacked clean from a corpse
but the teeth, I'm embarrassed to admit,
were pilfered from a homeless man
while he slept.

The origins of the limbs are varied:
military hospital dumpsters,
morgue break-in,
overzealous chainsaw
when my neighbor's came a-calling.

And I'm always first at accident scenes
in search of fully functioning organs,
and willing to dispatch a relative's noggin
if that skull can be put
to better work elsewhere.

And yet, despite my hard work,
this creature I've made
is a sorry-looking patchwork quilt
of mismatched body parts.

I've been trying to make a man.
But, sadly, men are all I have to work with.
