Rhapsody in Stone
By: Sultana Raza

But never will these mortals be able to guess our origins, or
How we came to be so in their sphere.
How we were literally frozen, then summoned,
Called to the dimension of this unique being, this super mortal Phidias.
This enigmatic, quiet, modest mortal who left not much trace of himself
On frail papyrus, so beloved of the other mortals if this age.

Who was he? Really a mortal? A mere human? A puny sculptor?
Or did he burn with the fires of heaven?
Though he brought us here to this purgatory.
To be fair, though that wasn't his idea at first.

He just used us to decorate the biggest, best,
Most proportionate, harmonious temple of all his land.
Never could he have guessed that here would we'd be hung,
Forever in a limbo, breathing in the same air as these puny ants.
