Interview with Kevin Magnus

Kevin Magnus: CW Winter: Um, okay. You came in when the magazine launched in issue #1, and you contributed monthly with a combination of poems to this very day! In all of those years, do you have a favorite memory during that time?
Kevin Magnus: Not really. I just write crap about what I'm feeling, and send it in. But, if I had to pick it was the very first Halloween issue. We all put our heads together to make it special, which I felt it was. It was a small group of folks, so we actually met up in person to talk about it.
CW Winter: I know that it has been many years ago, but what would you say was your best contribution, to the magazine?
Kevin Magnus: This is Christmas, has been my favorite poem right out of the gate. The holiday is something special and it's that one time a year where I get to share just how special it is to me.
CW Winter: Why do you write such emo poetry?
Kevin Magnus: It just comes natural, dude. The real me keeps things bottled up in my daily life and here I get to release it like firing a gun at a target.
CW Winter: Here's a good one. Why haven't you published a book of poetry?
Kevin Magnus: Meh. Who would want to buy my crap? A long time ago, we had discussed it, and put a teaser in an issue of the magazine, and quite literally, no one was interested. So, I was like forget it. It would be a waste of time and money.
CW Winter: With the good comes the bad. What would you say was the most trying time for you during that period?
Kevin Magnus: Dude, do you not read my poetry? Seriously, though. The day I learned that Terry Scheerer passed. It was a very dark day for me, and many others who loved him.
CW Winter: Can you tell us a fun Terry D. Scheerer story?
Kevin Magnus: I remember that I hand wrote a poem for the very first issue and handed it to him. He looked at it and grinned. He asked if I felt this piece was my best work, and I told him I thought it was. He crumbled the piece of paper and told me to try again.
CW Winter: Ouch.
Kevin Magnus: Yeah, but it was a good lesson to learn.
CW. Winter: What lesson is that?
Kevin Magnus: That you can always strive to do better. Sure, it pissed me off originally, but when I realized what he was trying to teach me…I was kinda like, "Gotcha."
CW Winter: Let's see I need a lighthearted question, now. Um, have you thought about writing stories?
Kevin Magnus: No why?
CW Winter: Just a question. Most of our poets do both, I was just wondering.
Kevin Magnus: Dude, I can barely write a poem. Those guys are multi-talented, they are real wordsmiths. But I, myself, am a one trick pony.
CW Winter: You write video game reviews from time to time, though.
Kevin Magnus: I was asked nicely. I've played lots of older games that I can share my opinion about. It's not creative writing, it's just me sharing my thoughts about a game I played twenty years ago.
CW Winter: Jumping to the present, do you still play a lot of video games nowadays?
Kevin Magnus: No. I play Minecraft from time to time.
CW Winter: As a writer who's been here for several years, how do you see The World of Myth as it is moving into its eighteenth year?
Kevin Magnus: It blows my mind! The magazine has truly moved past that mountain we've been stuck on for years. The people and their talent are amazing! But, it still has the intimate feel that issue one had. I am honored to still be around to be a part of it.
CW Winter: Is there anything in the works now?
Kevin Magnus: Just my Christmas poem for this year. I only work one month at a time.
CW Winter: If any of our readers want to contact you via social media, what outlets can they find you at?
Kevin Magnus: They don't.
CW Winter: Oh, come on.
Kevin Magnus: I have an email that I send my stuff in with. I don't have social media, or a cell phone. I don't like being tracked. So, yeah man, sorry.
CW Winter: Okay, I tried. Uh, thank you, again, for your time. Before we sign off, is there anything you would like to say as a parting note to our readers?
Kevin Magnus: Not really. I'm not someone who has words of advice or thought-provoking ideas. I'm just a dude who writes down what he feels once a month. Oh! Wait! I got something! Stay true to yourself! How's that?
