The Diary
By: Ann Christine Tabaka

She writes about a love she never had,
giving him the perfect name.

Blue eyes.
Black hair.

Tall and wild.
He can fill her fantasies with one smile.

She pretends that he lives far away,
traveling to lost horizons in her mind.

She holds her diary close to her heart.
Each day she adds another page.

Carefully dating each entry
with adventures she imagines.

She shares snippets with other girls.
They roll their eyes and shake their heads.

Even though alone, she is never without love,
as long as she can read her man into being.

Time passes, she grows older.
Diary tatters, smeared with fingerprints, and tears.

Still alone, she never gives up hope.
Clinging to her dream until the end.
